Description
Circa 1938. Serial no. 243. 19in. H Footnote to a fascinating decade in musical history: In the 1930's most juke boxes had a selection limited to fifty tunes. The Shyvers Multiphone had a choice of two hundred popular and classic tunes. Invented in Seattle by Ken Shyvers they were installed in cafes, restaurants and bars throughout the Northwest. Patrons inserted a coin into the slot and over telephone lines were connected to an operator to request a song. (Notice the panel labeled "Talk Here"). The telephone operators were actually an all woman team of disc jockeys, ready and waiting at their turntables in the Central Music Studio in Seattle and would play the requested song through the telephone connection. Out came the music through the little speakers at your table! See detail photo of the DJ's at work.
