Note: Inspired by the painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who made frames to harmonize with his art, Hermann Dudley Murphy founded the renowned American frame shop Carrig-Rohane (Gaelic for “red cliff") in 1903. Financial success was quick, and critical success followed. His carved and gilded frames were favored by the artists Emile Carlsen,
Frank W. Benson, Abbott Thayer, and Childe Hassam, among many others.
