Item Details
Description
Jiang Dou Red (cowpea red 豇豆紅) glazed porcelain is an in-glaze copper red invented during mid/late Kangxi period. Due to difficulty in controlling the firing temperature and degree of maintaining copper in reduced state to form the red, only a small quantity of it was successfully made, usually small wares. Thereafter, hardly any were made. This Yongzheng Jiang Dou Red lotus flower bowl is an extremely rare imperial ware. Most collectors love the mellowed grayish pale and uneven red color, though some prefer the intense even red one. This bowl has all the important features of cowpea red glaze of Kangxi period, e.g., the mellowed red color with some green dots, and the smooth, unctuous glaze surface without glaring reflection of other types of red glaze. Without looking at the outer base one would think it is a Kangxi imperial ware. However, the Yongzheng imperial mark clearly tells that it was made during Yongzheng. The intense and pure blue of the mark is definitely one of Yongzheng's underglaze cobalt blue. Although Yongzheng's reign was only about 11 years, it has several versions of the imperial porcelain mark. The one appears on this bowl is published in many compendia of porcelain appraisal, see, e.g., the color photo sections, photo 93, at the front of "Appraisal and Appreciation of Ancient Chinese Porcelain中國古代瓷器鑒賞辭典, ISBN 7-5011-1637-7 G. 85 585, 1992) The slightly curved tip of the foot rim reveals a very fine clay body with subtle orange red color (a type of kiln red), which is also typical for early Yongzheng years. More importantly, the 2 demarcation lines on the foot wall between the glaze and the clay body are neatly cut so that a step forms between the glaze and the clay body. This kind refined foot rim cutting seldom existed thereafter. Due to 300 years of aging, the glaze has lost the shine of newly fired porcelain. Imperial Yongzheng porcelain wares have been highly valued, thus many imitations have been made. But most of the imitations lack many of these features.
