Description
ALBERT CARRIER BELLEUSE (France, 1824-1887).
Onyx, gilt and silvered bronze.
Signed on the base.
Measurements: 85,5 x 49,5 cm (diameter).
Centre made in onyx from Algerie and bronze that stands out for its dimensions and opulence resulting from the quality of the materials and the design of the piece. A four-legged gilt-bronze claw foot supports an onyx base with a rounded and moulded perimeter. The foot in the centre is sculptural in form and features two ladies dressed in the classical manner, wearing the much-loved wet cloths. Finally, the piece ends with the onyx bowl. French sculptor and draughtsman trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, renowned for his neoclassical sculptures of great realism and delicacy. It is a balanced work where the representation of movement is an essential point of the work itself. During his early training he was a pupil of the medallist David d'Angers, then moved to England before returning to France for good in 1855. He made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1851, but did not become famous until 1861, when he presented his group "Salve Regina", which won him the third medal. In 1866 he won the first medal with his work "Angelica", and in 1867 he was awarded the medal of honour at the Salon, as well as being decorated with the Legion of Honour. In his sculpture workshop, he worked for a long time as the marble artist Auguste Rodin. In 1876 he was appointed director of artistic works at the National Porcelain Factory in Sèvres and in 1884 he published "L'application de la figure humaine à la decoration et à l'ornementation -industrielles", a collection of two hundred drawings in which he depicted anthropomorphic objects based on his ideas about the decorative arts. Some of his works can be found in the Museo del Prado.
