Note
Already an established designer of stained glass, Sotter settled in Bucks County in 1919 where, for the remainder of his career, he documented the region’s picturesque landscape and the buildings that graced it. The present painting depicts the Miner Hillard Milling Company plant, historic landmark of the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Sotter’s familiarity with—and ostensible affection for—industrial architecture is on full display in the nearly 23 x 32-inch canvas. The stately, four-story flour mill is silhouetted by a star-spangled night sky and the timbered foothills of the Pocono Mountains. The buildings, with rhythmic, fenestrated façades, occupy the middleground of the composition; railroad tracks striate a blanket of downy snow, at once converging at and directing viewers' gaze toward the plant. A series of lamplights emit a golden glow and offer relief from the chill of a winter's eve.
Sotter's mills, whether in Bucks County or farther afield, are cathedrals of industry–and the thread that links his early and mature career. He accords the structures a quiet grandeur, enhanced here by a generous commingling of light and color, shadow and atmosphere. Best known for his nocturnes–many of which were painted on site, en plein air–Sotter, in Miner Hillard Milling Company, treats viewers to a poetic winter idyll, while monumentalizing a modest flour mill.
