QAJAR BRASS BASIN
QAJAR BRASS BASIN
Item Details
Description
Ca. 19th century AD. A brass ablution basin formed from brass and takes on a squat, globular shape with a widely flaring rim. The hinged pierced drainer is a marvel of design, featuring a central raised knob, serrated outer edge, and delicate openwork decoration of swirling tendrils around the centre. The wide flange is shaped like a twelve-petaled flower, each petal adorned with intricately woven tendrils and small blooms. It's a testament to the skilled artisans who created this beautiful piece, and their dedication to precision and detail. Ablution, or ritual purification, is an integral part of Islamic worship, and this basin was crafted with that purpose in mind. The ritual of ablution is performed before prayer and involves washing the hands, face, and feet. The design of this basin allows for the easy collection and disposal of water, making it an essential tool for the devout. As an object of art and utility, this basin embodies the values of the Islamic world, which places a strong emphasis on beauty and practicality. Size: L:135mm / W:320mm ; 1.3kgProvenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly in a collection of A. Kotlar, since the 1970s.
