Description
EXCEEDINGLY RARE PHALIBOIS AUTOMATON WITH THREE FRENCH BISQUE DOLLS BY BRU. 29” x 21”. Arranged upon an ebonized wooden oval base under a glass dome with painted scenic background and applied greenery depicting a dimensional garden scene, is a bisque head ballerina holding garland of flowers, a bisque head gentleman with tambourine, and a bisque head seated lady with gilt fan. Each doll is by Leon Casimir Bru, has inset glass eyes, closed mouth, mohair wig, original costume, carton torso, metal hands, and each wearing original delicate silk costume. When wound, the lady fans herself, turning her head from side-to-side while the gentleman shakes his tambourine in a realistic manner, and the ballerina twirls round-and-round. Beautiful musical tunes play.
Commentary: Attributed to Phalibois, Paris, circa 1865. A most rare early automaton with three Bru bisque dolls which are posed in charming scene with various movements accompanied by beautiful music; key is not original.
