Description
According to Thomas Wheelock, such masks originate in the far eastern area near Boulsa, Burkina Faso and were worn by aggressive dancers who would patrol the ceremonial grounds and keep unruly spectators in line with a whip. The mask is carved wood with hibiscus fiber headdress and painted in black and white pigments. The mask shows wear and handling. The mask is quite tall and measures 54 inches tall ( 62 inches tall on professional custom display stand which is included) Provenance: The Thomas Wheelock collection, New York.
