Description
Handsome pewter mug with an embossed coat of arms of the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, 4.75 x 4.5, signed on the back in black felt tip, “W. C. Westmoreland, ‘36.” Engraving to underside reads: “Hand Craft Pewter, Made in Sheffield, England.” In fine condition, with various scuffs and dings to mug; the autograph bears some slight rubbing. Accompanied by a photo of General Westmoreland holding the mug and a Howitzer yearbook.
Westmoreland was a member of the distinguished West Point class of 1936 that also included Creighton Abrams and Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Westmoreland graduated as First Captain—the highest cadet rank—and received the Pershing Sword, which is ‘presented to the cadet with highest level of military proficiency.’
