The Mumbling Muse

THE MUMBLING MUSE is a small family-oriented and Internet-based Auction Gallery located on beautiful Bowen Island in British Columbia, CANADA. :: It all started with family For over 100 years and across four generations, ‘The Pappas Family’ has been synonymous with trading posts and auctions in North America. :: The early years... Our story begins in 1913 when my great grandfather Theodore Pappas I, set sail from Greece to New York, with a pocket full of change. Eventually, he found his way to Canada and settled along a trade route in British Columbia. During the construction of the Canadian Railway, he worked as a shoeshine and water boy, culminating many friendships with the local native (first nations) people. These special relationships later allowed him to open one of the first trading posts in Western Canada. After the birth of his son, (Theodore Pappas II) he moved his operations to Vancouver, B.C. and developed his unique talent both as an auctioneer and an entrepreneur, and launched a very successful auction company, which he later entrusted to his son. :: A third generation of auctioneers is born... Years later, In 1979 after completing extensive studies in art and architecture, my father, Theodore Pappas III opened his own trading post, specializing in used goods, antiques, collectibles and native art in the basement of his father’s auction company. Over the next two decades Theodore Pappas III became an auctioneer himself, and successfully founded and launched West Coast Estates (an auction company specializing in estate items, antiques, fine art and collectibles) and was one of the original co-founders of Seahawk Auctions (specializing in native and tribal art). Seahawk Auctions still remains in operation today. :: Tradition meets technology... In 1997 at the age of 20, I joined the family business after receiving intensive computer training and convinced my father (who still does not own, or operate a computer) to invest in new digital/internet division. Months later, WEST COAST ESTATES became the FIRST Canadian Auction House to broadcast an entire auction sale ‘live’ over the internet. Our little ‘family’ auction house had begun averaging 115,000-135,000+ unique monthly visitors to our website, our sales had reached six figures and we were shipping rare antiques, collectibles and fine art around the globe. In 2008, after careful consideration Ted ceased all operations at West Coast Estates and retired from the auction business. Currently, my father is semi-retired, and maintains a successful fine art consulting business utilizing his over 40 years experience in the trade. Ted can also be found at local antique shows and related events around the country actively pursuing his first passion: treasure hunting (professional picking) for fun and profit. :: A return to family tradition... In 2012, after several years in the corporate world and a few entrepreneurial ventures behind me, I returned to the antiques and collectibles trade in the family tradition and founded: THE MUMBLING MUSE. THE MUMBLING MUSE is a 21st century trading-post built on modern web-based technology rather than a traditional bricks and mortar foundation. :: Today and looking forward... THE MUMBLING MUSE continues to maintain it's reputation and professional integrity as traders of the fine, unique, rare and curious. Along with our vast network of trade resources which includes valued friends, private collectors, dealers, galleries, restorers, pickers, consultants, experts, auctions, museums and educational institutions we hope to offer an ever-changing and frequently updated selection of fairly represented and accurately described items for years to come.
